WARNING: before proceeding with single node installation of Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor, please be aware that with one node, Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor will not be able to triangulate the positions of the Wi-Fi devices detected. This means that the locations of all the Wi-Fi devices detected will be equal to the location of the unique node installed (when looking at the Accuware dashboard and when calling the Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor “stations” API).

Despite this, even with only one node, you will be able to test the Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor API and make assertions regarding the proximity of the Wi-Fi devices detected with respect to the node by using the RSS values returned by the Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor API. Please look at this article.


Before installing Wi-Fi Location Monitor make sure you have read carefully all the pages (prior to this page) that can be found on the left sidebar and make sure you have:

  • One node
  • The Accuware Activation email with the credentials to access the Cloudtrax and the Accuware dashboard

Step 1 – Installing a single node

Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor leverages a set of Wi-Fi nodes that need to be deployed in the area to monitor. The nodes are programmed to detect Wi-Fi signals transmitted by nearby Wi-Fi devices and report this information to the Accuware servers. To ensure proper communication with the server, your node has to be connected to the Internet using an Ethernet cable. This node will serve as gateway for the system. Please refer to the instructions below for the installation of the gateway.

1.1 – Installation of the gateway

Use an Ethernet cable to connect each gateway to a DSL router, modem, or network switch. Please plug the Ethernet cable into the socket that is located next to the PoE socket of the back of the node. Then connect the gateway node to its power supply and verify that after a few minutes the WLAN LED starts blinking.

PoE (Power over Ethernet): if you want to use PoE (an Ethernet cable that provides data connection AND electricity) you can do so. In this case you need to read carefully this article.

During the installation of the gateway node take note of the MAC address and its location. The MAC address is printed on a label on the bottom of each node.

Placement of the node: the node MUST be placed following carefully the information contained inside this support page.

Step 2 – Configuring the Cloudtrax dashboard

Cloudtrax is a third-party dashboard that provides a convenient way to monitor and configure the node used by Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor. You have to keep in mind that this tool is NOT involved in the trilateration of the locations of the Wi-Fi devices detected. Indeed, you can place the node in any position in the Cloudtrax dashboard. This also means that there is NO need to upload a floor plan inside the Cloudtrax dashboard.

The credentials necessary to login to the Cloudtrax dashboard are contained in the Accuware Activation email with your account information. You DO NOT have to create a brand new Cloudtrax account!

After physically installing the nodes, login to Cloudtrax at this page. Please supply the credentials contained in the Accuware Activation email and press the Login button.

2.1 – Parameters of the Cloudtrax dashboard

Some of the parameters of the Cloudtrax dashboard account have been pre-configured by the Accuware engineers with values that are compatible with the use of Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor. Changing these settings might cause Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor to stop working or might cause some accuracy problems. You can modify some of the settings but you MUST leave the following parameters as-is:

  • Configure > Radio > Transmit Power – leave it to 26 dBm
  • Configure > Maintenance > Automatic Upgrades – leave this switch OFF. In order to prevent any problem we prefer to upgrade your Cloudtrax firmware to the latest version ONLY when we can ensure a 100% of compatibility with the Accuware firmware. The latest Cloudtrax firmware compatible with the Accuware firmware is the version 6.3.16.
  • Configure > Advanced > custom.sh server – leave this text field as-is.
  • Configure > Radio > Channels – leave it to Manual and choose a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi channel according to the information reported inside this page.

The Cloudtrax dashboard is a very powerful tool to manage your Open Mesh Wi-Fi network. You can find all the guides of the Cloudtrax dashboard in the bottom left area of the login screen:

2.2 – Add the node

To add the node of your Open Mesh network:

  1. Select the Manage > access points
  2. Press the Map button to access the map for your site.
  3. Click on the map to add an Open Mesh node, and enter its MAC address (e.g. AC:86:74:XX:XX:XX) and optionally a name and a description that will make it easier to identify the node itself. If you see this error message “Mac (XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX) already exists in another network. (17002)” it means that the node is inside another Cloudtrax network. Please let us know the network name and we will move the node into the new network. If you don’t know the name of the other network then you need to get in touch with the Cloudtrax support team using this form and let them know that you lost the node with MAC address XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX. They will let you know the Cloudtrax network name.

Positions of the node: as explained before, you can place the nodes in any position in the Cloudtrax dashboard and this won’t affect the data collected by Wi-Fi Location Monitor. Despite this we suggest placing each node on the map in a position that approximately matches the physical location of the node – this will facilitate our operations in case we have to access your Cloudtrax dashboard to troubleshoot the installation.

2.3 – Verify the network connectivity

It might take up 15 minutes for the Open mesh network to form and become operative. Eventually, the node should become active (green).

After 10 minutes, to check the status of your Open Mesh node:

  1. Select the Manage > access points
  2. Press the List button to access the list of nodes for your site.
  3. Verify that the node is marked with dark green (gateway nodes) icon.

Troubleshooting: if, after 10 minutes,one or more nodes remain inactive you will easily find a solution in this page.

Step 3 – Configuring the Accuware dashboard

3.1 – Login to the Accuware dashboard

Access the Accuware dashboard at this page and follow the instructions on the login screen. Please supply the credentials contained in the Accuware Activation email and press the Login to dashboard button.

3.2 – Add the node

This step is similar to the one described for the Cloudtrax dashboard. To set the node position, please:

  1. Select Wi-Fi Loc Monitor > Nodes
  2. Click on the map to create a new node (or click on marker to edit the information of an existing node). Enter its MAC address (e.g. AC:86:74:XX:XX:XX) and optionally a name and a description that will make it easier to identify the node itself.
  3. Click on Save. If you see an Error message it means that the node is inside another Accuware site. Please submit a support request using this form and provide us the MAC address so we can remove it from the other site.

OM2P-LC nodes: the OM2PLC nodes transmits the reports to the Accuware server using a different MAC address compared to the one they are supposed to use (the one printed on the label on the bottom of the nodes). In order to overcome this issue, you need to add to the Accuware dashboard a MAC address with the last byte increased of 1 digit.

  • Cloudtrax dashboard: EC:89:74:06:C1:C0
  • Accuware dashboard: EC:89:74:06:C1:C1

3.3 – Verify the reporting status

It might take up 5 to 10 minutes for the node to download the Accuware firmware. Eventually, the nodes should become active (green).

After 15 minutes, to check the status of the node:

  1. Click on the Wi-Fi Loc Monitor > Map.
  2. Verify that the node is active (green). The green color indicates that the Accuware Wi-Fi Location Monitor firmware is correctly installed on the node and the nodes are reporting data to the Accuware server.

Troubleshooting: if, after 15 minutes, the node remains inactive, you will easily find a solution in this page.

3.4 – Verify the type of node

During this quick and important step you need to verify if the type of nodes purchased by your team match the type shown inside the Accuware dashboard. To do so:

  1. Select Wi-Fi Loc Monitor > Settings.
  2. Check the type of node shown inside the Node Type field and compare it with the nodes purchased.

If the Node Type is different from the nodes purchased please submit a support request using this form and do not proceed with the tests.
